This is such a lovely read and you have really brought the story of fair trade out in such a real and inspiring way. I wept with laughter reading your skinny neck jumper story...this is truly a wonderful book (Tania Pramschufer, The Ethical Emporium)
A most readable portrait of fair trade - and a great account of a personal journey too (Richard Adams, founder of Traidcraft)
It made me laugh aloud on the tube. (Zehra Ludlow, London designer)
It's rare to find a book about a "serious issue" that is well-written, informative and amusing, but Jeremy's managed it without sermonising. (Antony Worrall Thompson)
I have nearly finished your book...I must say it's a brilliant one. The chapter "On the Hippy Trail" brought tears and laughter..a wonderful book on fair trde (Lucas Caldeira, Asha Handicratfs, India)
A very interesting and stimulating book that treats fair trade very humanly...it balances the impression of fair trade's very high aspirations and motivations. Now people will see us fair traders as flesh and blood, with all weaknesses and mistakes - not saints or perfect people! (Loreta Rafisura, CEO of SHAPII Inc)
What an amazing book! I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know (Leander Hollings, Leeds)
Reviews fom SHARED EARTH staff:
It's the first book on Fair Trade I have read that has engaged me from the first page I read it in a day! It's a very accessible book, highly informative, with many serious questions raised about fair trade and also global warming. But it's written in such a way, you forget that you are picking up so much about the important issues facing fair trade companies today. I found it an education, even with all my years working for Shared Earth, I learnt many things about fair trade (as well as Jeremy!) that I wasnt aware of but they are presented to the reader in a non academic way, Jeremy has written the book, in a very entertaining fashion, many parts made me laugh and many stories, were very moving and made me literally cry. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about fair trade, and those who just want a really good book to read. I also think it's the perfect book for any ethical or fair trade company to get their newly recruited staff to read! (Debbie Fletcher, Leeds Shop Manager)
I found it really interesting to see how the Manchester shop as a branch had developed; from its early stages of retail when it opened in 1990 to the thriving shop it now is (Philippa Drury, part time supervisor, Manchester)
Whilst working for Shared Earth I've learnt a lot about our suppliers. This book now gives our customers the chance to read about how they started and what they've become with Shared Earth's involvement. It helps you understand that they dont look for charity and they dont want hand outs, they just want the opportunity to make a decent living, be paid a fair wage and better themselves, their families and their communities by being self sufficient.(Emma Booth, Assistant Manager, Manchester)
The strongest message that comes out of this book is how the courage, determination and sheer will-power of one person can change the lives of so many. Hilarious, thought-provoking and informative, Jeremy's book is an excellent read and a truthful narrative of his journey into the world of Fair Trade (Lynne Dawson, Senior Retail Manager 1999 - present)
An informative well written book that delves with passion and humour into the ever expanding world of Fair Trade (Gail Barrow, Manchester Shop Manager)
I really enjoyed reading Jeremy's book and was surprised to find out about all the things Jeremy did when he was younger, like getting arrested for squatting and hitch hiking across Europe to India all alone. His book has made me realize that anything is possible if you really try. "Coffins, Cats and Fair trade Sex Toys" made me laugh and in some parts made me quite sad but it also helped me to understand more about the amazing company that I work for and the people that we are helping. A really good read. (Meg Smith, Supervisor, Manchester)
